As well as helping to record your thoughts sketching buildings can help you work out what you’re seeing. This is especially the case If you can get inside as well as outside during a sketching session.
I tried this with a comparatively small timber framed agricultural building in Hereford to try and understand the phasing of its timber framed construction. Step one was to draw a bird’s eye view to record what could be observed in the elevations. Step two was to work out what’s happening on the inside.
